The mighty Mt. Mitchener is one of the iconic peaks on the south shore of Abraham Lake and becomes visible once you first approach the lake from Nordegg. Here at the „Belly of Abraham“, the part of the lake below Mt. Abraham (between Windy Point and the Aurum Lodge), it was the part of the lake that froze the latest this year, most likely the high winds in this region disrupted ice formation. However, under high pressure and no winds in early January it eventually happened and with it the famous methane bubble got trapped in the ice as well. Last year the ice here was considerably thicker and snow cover was low, hence better bubble conditions. But this patch here was probably the most impressive I saw this day in early January. I liked how the condensation trails added some interest to the sky and also pointed directly to the peak.
